The Curbing Process

The first step of the process is where we will spray out the ground with paint with what we measured and estimated for you. This could be the day of or days before we start depending on your schedule. Once we get final approval the process can begin!

All of our equipment is on the smaller side and will not cause any significant damage. The most damaging tool we will use is probably the wheelbarrow going back and forth.

Step 1 - Ground Preparation

  • This is where we will use a bed edger to cut the marked out path for the curb to be installed on. This process will pulverize the soil and give a good foundation for the curb. This will allow the curb to be slightly recessed into the ground. The grass will be able to grow up to the curb and give it a more natural look.

  • We will clean up the pulverized soil and can remove from the property.  Many customers like to keep it for other areas of their property. Let us know what you would like.

Step 2 - Mixing concrete (we will need access to your water spigot)

  • Our mixer is mounted on our trailer to make the job faster and easier.

  • We mix our concrete with a special mix for curbing.  We use a special sand, Portland cement, Fiber mesh, and a water reducer all for added strength. This is also where we add your first base color called integral color. This benefits the curb if were ever to chip from some kind of damage, it is colored throughout making damage less noticeable.

  • We will need to use your water spigot for mixing the concrete.  We will have our own hoses and nozzles.

  • We keep everything on our truck and trailer for easy cleanup.

Step 3 - Extruding

  • We will load our machine with steel cable giving your curb a continuous cable throughout project. This keeps the curb together after cracking in the control joints and will not allow heaving like some competitors curbing.

  • Once we have the perfect mix for your curb it will be placed in a wheelbarrow and brought to the curbing machine.

  • Concrete is transferred into the extruder and the process of making the curb begins.

  • The concrete is packed tight with a plunger through a slip form shaping the curb to the initial shape. This is specifically designed for the curbing industry.

  • As the concrete is extruded it will then be troweled smooth before the stamping begins.

Step 4 - Stamping/texturing/coloring

  • This is where the design starts to come to life.

  • We use color release agents on the curbing to prevent rollers and texturing stamps from sticking. These are also the accent colors added to the curb. Control joints will be cut in to help control where the concrete will crack so it's not noticeable.

  • Once the curb is finished we will come to you for your approval of a job well done.

  • The colors will not be the true colors at this point.  The application of the sealer is where the colors pop out.

Step 5 - Sealing

  • Depending on the weather we will return in a week or two to seal your curbs.

  • This is where the colors come to life. It will appear much darker than the final appearance will be. It will lighten up over the next month or two.

  • We will then give you information on sealing your curb yourself or schedule a maintenance plan for sealing.

Step 6 - Follow the curbing care instructions

  • Please follow the curbing care instructions also given during the first 28 days.

  • If there are any problems or concerns please do not hesitate to call or email us.
